Acupuncture

Address the root cause of imbalance.

Acupuncture is a healing practice that rewards patience and consistency. It offers a natural, effective way to restore balance and strengthen your overall well-being. By stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture relieves pain, reduces stress, and helps with a wide range of conditions — from chronic pain and migraines to digestive issues and insomnia.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice in which fine needles are inserted into the skin at precise points and depths. The goal is to restore the flow of qi (chi) — the vital life force that traditional Chinese medicine believes runs through the body.

When qi is blocked, it affects health in many ways and undermines overall well-being. Acupuncture helps release that blockage and restore the flow.

Evidence & Recognition

The World Health Organization (WHO) has formally identified 91 conditions for which acupuncture is appropriate — covering a broad spectrum of pain, digestive, neurological, and immune-related disorders. Modern neuroimaging research has shown that acupuncture works through measurable mechanisms: modulating specific brain networks, activating the body's endogenous opioid system, and dampening pain signaling at both the spinal and supraspinal levels. The result is a clinically meaningful, sustained effect on chronic pain that goes well beyond placebo. A thousand-year-old tradition, in other words, has stepped firmly into the era of evidence-based medicine.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

  1. Intake & TCM Diagnosis — Your practitioner will take a detailed history of your chief complaint, lifestyle, diet, and sleep, and apply the four classical TCM methods (looking, listening, asking, touching) to identify your pattern.
  1. A Personalized Plan — Based on your constitution, your practitioner selects the points and complementary therapies (infrared light, cupping, meridian massage) for the day's session.
  1. The Treatment Itself — Hair-thin needles are placed gently. Most patients feel only a mild heaviness or a faint electric tingle (TCM calls this *de qi*, "the arrival of qi") — not pain. Needles stay in for 20–30 minutes while you rest.
  1. Follow-Up Guidance — Your practitioner will share lifestyle, dietary, or follow-up recommendations. Most chronic issues benefit from a course of 6–10 sessions to produce visible, stable improvement.

A few practical tips: don't come on an empty stomach or right after a heavy meal; loose, comfortable clothing is best; avoid cold showers or strenuous workouts immediately after a session.

Frequently asked

Does acupuncture really help insomnia?
A 2020 JAMA Internal Medicine RCT showed acupuncture produced a clinically meaningful drop in ISI (Insomnia Severity Index) at 8 weeks, significantly better than sham.
How many sessions for sleep to improve?
Most patients feel improved sleep at sessions 4–6 and stabilize by 6–10. Adding Chinese herbal medicine can shorten the course.
Can I continue sleep meds during acupuncture?
Yes — we recommend keeping current medications until acupuncture clearly takes effect (usually after sessions 4–6), then discussing taper with your physician.
