Moxibustion
Warm the yang, fortify the foundation — TCM's "warming remedy."
Moxibustion is one of TCM's core external therapies. By burning compressed mugwort (moxa) at or near acupoints, it delivers therapeutic heat plus mugwort's intrinsic properties — especially powerful for yang-deficient, cold-stagnation, and chronic-weakness presentations.

What Is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion uses dried mugwort (artemisia) processed into "moxa wool," which is ignited and held above or applied to specific acupoints. Mechanism is dual: deep penetrating warmth + the pharmacology of mugwort itself.
- Warms and frees the meridians: heat dissolves cold-stagnation
- Tonifies yang: especially kidney and spleen yang — a traditional winter-wellness practice
- Harmonizes qi and blood: mugwort itself warms channels, stops bleeding, eases cold pain
Types of Moxibustion We Offer
| Type | Method | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Direct/Hovering Moxa | Moxa stick held 2–3 cm from skin, 10–20 min | Most cold-deficiency patterns |
| Ginger-Insulated Moxa | Ginger slice on acupoint, moxa cone burns on top | Cold-stagnation cramps, joint pain |
| Du Channel Moxa (back-spread) | Moxa spread along the spine, 1.5–2 hr session | Comprehensive yang tonification (seasonal) |
| San Fu / San Jiu Seasonal Moxa | Peak summer / deep winter timing | Chronic respiratory, allergies, low immunity |
Evidence & Recognition
Evidence
- Multiple studies show moxibustion's significant benefit for primary dysmenorrhea, postpartum uterine involution, and chronic fatigue.
- A 2019 RCT showed San Fu moxibustion significantly reduced winter exacerbation frequency in chronic bronchitis patients.
